| | | CPAP News Letter - Issue: 9
Our newsletter is designed to provide information
regarding state-of-the art equipment and the
latest techniques to treat sleep apnea. We hope
it is interesting and helpful to you as you work
to optimize your apnea treatment.
In our April newsletter, we mentioned that The New
England Journal of Medicine had published a Canadian
study demonstrating major improvements in heart
function gained by treating sleep apnea with CPAP. One
of the findings was that heart size decreased nearly
6% when CPAP was used. Now a new study published in
the August issue of Chest has found that people with
sleep apnea often have enlarged hearts. The good news
is that treating the apnea problem can reverse the
heart enlargement. These studies are even more proof
of the value of treating sleep apnea.

forehead support with four positions and an improved

unchanged and fit on the new Ultra. The mask also
includes quick release headgear clips.
Innomed Technologies, the people who make the
"Nasal-Aire" nasal cannula system have redesigned the
prong and now call the system the Nasal Aire II. It
uses a softer prong material and has a less pronounced
ridge on the end of the prong. They have also worked
to reduce the "jetting" action of the device and have
redone the exhalation ports to reduce noise. A new
size fills the gap between medium and large (medium
plus). This improved system has just become available
and can be seen at
The smallest CPAP+humidifier integrated unit, Fisher &
Paykel HC220 has received some noteworthy
improvements. Now called the HC220LE, it has been made
world class quiet. It also has a humidity management
system called "Ambient Tracking Plus". It provides the
right amount of humidity while automatically adjusting
for such things as room temperature, mouth or mask
leaks. This is an industry first.
Puritan Bennett, the makers of the world's smallest
CPAP, will be releasing a super small Auto CPAP
named the 420E in the next few weeks. It is as
small as the other 420 models and will adjust
pressures to your needs as you sleep. Software
detailing the performance of the machine and quality
of your sleep will be available.
